What Is MSG?

My favorite Chinese restaurant uses MSG. Do I stop eating there?

What is MSG? Is it harmful?

MSG, commonly known as Monosodium Glutamate, has been used as a flavor enhancer for decades in some Chinese food, in some canned vegetables, in many sauces, dressings, soups and processed meats. Although MSG has been classified as generally safe by the FDA, it's use remains controversial. Some people believe MSG to be a carcinogen (a cancer causing agent) although results are inconclusive. For this reason, the FDA requires manufacturers to list MSG on labels whenever it is used as an ingredient.

The FDA has received various reports to reactions of food containing MSG. Some side effects include:

- Headache
- Nausea
- Weakness
- Sweating

Although results are inconclusive, symptoms are usually mild and don't require treatment. The best way to avoid any side effects is to avoid consuming foods containing MSG.
